In einem Interview mit dem BR spricht Prof. Dr. Judith Beyer über Staatenlosigkeit und deren Implikationen für Betroffene im Kontext von Nationalstaatlichkeit. Des Weiteren betont sie, dass Personen, die eine Staatsangehörigkeit haben, sich dieser Tatsache und den damit verbundenen Möglichkeiten, Freiheiten und Privilegien häufig nicht bewusst sind.

Criminal Complaint Filed in Germany against Myanmar Generals for Atrocity Crimes. 24/01/2023.

On January 24, 2023, the human rights organisation Fortify Rights filed a criminal complaint in Germany under the principle of universal jurisdiction against senior Myanmar military generals and others for atrocity crimes. One of the 16 complainants is PhD student Nickey Diamond.

Dr Jon Schubert was interviewed on Angolan politics in the Slovenian programme “Radio Student FM89.3”. He sketched out colonial-political developments in the country and informed on the 27-year-lasting presidency by José Eduardo dos Santos. According to Schubert, the younger generation started to denounce the infrastructural undersupply in many sectors in 2011. With the following presidency by João Lourenço political defaults lead to a stagnating economic development for the country and therefore for its population.

Prof. Dr. Judith Beyer was interviewed in the ARD programme alpha-nachgehakt about the situation in Myanmar after the military coup in February 2021.

According to Beyer, the population continues to be strongly repressed by the military, which makes effective mass protests by the civil disobedience movement against the military junta impossible. Also, due to the lack of international support for the Burmese people, the military can act freely in the country. Beyer considers the elections in 2023, postponed by Min Aung Hlaing, to be unrealistic; if elections are allowed, they will not be fair and free. She also reports on the situation of the Rohingya in partly illegal refugee camps in Bangladesh and the deportation of people from the overcrowded camps. Possible actions for international actors are the provision of concrete humanitarian aid and the reform of the asylum system to enable stateless people to move across borders and find a place in the system through identification documents.

The doctoral candidates Carolin Hirsch and Benedict Mette-Starke talked about the repercussions, the coup on February, 01 2021 has on the societal and political situation in Myanmar in the podcast “9B”. The Myanmar experts spoke about how the coup affects the further implementation of their PhD-projects and the everyday lives of their research partners.

Carolin Hirsch wurde in einem Info-Spezialbeitrag des Radiosenders MHX interviewt. Sie kontextualisierte die Machtübernahme durch das Militär in der politischen Geschichte des Landes und gab Einblicke in die derzeitige Alltags- und Protestgestaltung der Einwohner:innen Myanmars. Im zweiten Teil der Sendung erzählte sie von ihrer Feldforschung in Yangon und ihrer gemeinsamen Arbeit mit der Punkband „Rebel Riot“, im Rahmen der Initiative „Food Not Bombs Yangon“ sowie ihres Promotionsprojektes „Activist Becomings in contemporary Myanmar“.

Benedict Mette-Starke spricht in einem Interview mit "radio eins" (30.03.2021) über die gegenwärtigen Proteste in Myanmar und den möglichen Einfluss der EU, Deutschland und den USA.

"Die Menschen wollen nicht in einer Militärdiktatur leben"

Rund acht Wochen nach dem Militärputsch findet der zivile Widerstand auf den Straßen von Myanmar vor allem in der Nacht statt – und auch in den sozialen Medien. Der Saarländische Rundfunk hat mit Prof. Judith Beyer über die Lage vor Ort gesprochen.

Am 12.03.2021 wurde Prof. Beyer auf „rbb inforadio“ zum Thema „Vom Militär verhängter Ausnahmezustand in Myanmar“ interviewt und sprach über die Demonstrationen, die seit über einem Monat den Alltag der Bevölkerung in Myanmar bestimmen. Trotz der zunehmenden Gewalt durch das Militär, die mittlerweile international als Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit klassifiziert wird, gehen die Menschen in Myanmar weiterhin auf die Straße.

In der Sendung alpha-demokratie kontextualisierte Prof. Dr. Judith Beyer den Militärputsch vom 01. Februar 2021 und dessen Folgen. Sie beantwortete Fragen zur geographischen, ökonomischen und demographischen Lage in Myanmar sowie zur Person der Staatsrätin und NLD-Anführerin Aung San Suu Kyi und ihrer Rolle im Land.

Prof. Dr. Judith Beyer was interviewed on Al Jazeera English on the current situation in Myanmar. In the conversation she reported on the rising violence by the military and on the civil disobedience-movement of the protestors. She furthermore talked about parallels to other protest movements taking place in Southeast Asia and India. These are examples of transnational and transcultural solidarity and of activist cooperation fighting for democracy.

In einem Gespräch im Rahmen des Podcasts 99 ZU EINS sprach Carolin Hirsch über historische, politische und sozio-ökonomische Hintergründe des Landes Myanmar sowie die seit Anfang Februar stattfindenden Massenproteste gegen den Militärputsch in Myanmar.

In einem Radiointerview auf 'Radio Eins Rbb' am 13.02.2021 berichtete Prof. Beyer darüber, dass Personen aus der ganzen sozialen Bandbreite der Bevölkerung Myanmars gegen den Militärputsch und für die Demokratie auf die Straße gehen.

Within the context of the webinar series in honour of the legal anthropologist Sally Engle Merry, who died in 2020, Prof Beyer was part of a session.
