Interdisciplinary event by students
On November, 09 2021 the event “What is economics? Rethinking and participating in science and everyday life” took place. It was conceptualized by students of the master "anthropology and sociology" who were attending the seminar “Activism and Social Change” by Mohira Suyarkulova. By taking anthropological perspectives into account, alternative angles on the understanding of economics in education and praxis was lectured and discussed. The overall question “what is economics?” is meant to contribute to a redefinition of the concept.
As experts, economic anthropologist Prof. Dr. Stefan Leins (University of Konstanz), Wolfgang Läuger (Economy for the Commong Good) and Stephan Stuckmann (Network for Pluralist Economics) participated.
In the concluding discussion, the constant emphasis of economic sciences as social and not as natural sciences was put on record. Economics and economy are made by humans and therefore are dirigible by humans. The aim, to include a broader methodical and theoretical spectrum for economic science education at German universities was formulated. Ultimately a wide understanding of economics and its relevance for every person, for experts and for laypeople was emphasized. The vision, to initiate a new regional group for the Network for Pluralist Economics was developed.
